Flowing Afterglow Mass Spectrometry (FA-MS) was invented by Professors David Smith and Patrik Spanel as a method for determining deuterium to hydrogen ratios in exhaled human breath. The impetus for this development was a desire to use isotope dilution techniques to determin the total body water in dialysis patients.

This site gives some of the technical background to this development and describes some early experiments. Further information is available in the Instrument Science website
